1. How does the FLUency program work?

FLUency connects families & school staff on issues of student health, enabling quicker detection of spreading illness and rapid response to help keep students well and in class. All school families and staff at participating schools can sign up to receive a free award-winning Kinsa Smart thermometer, and join a private school group on the Kinsa app to see anonymous and aggregated information on what symptoms and illnesses are going around their school and their grade.

2. How do I enroll my school or know if my school is participating?

If you’re a school administrator, you can expect to be contacted for the opportunity to opt-in to FLUency. If your school has not been contacted, please submit interest in the program here. 

If you are a teacher, staff member, or parent, please check with your school administrator(s) to see if your school is already participating.

3. As a school administrator, what are my responsibilities with FLUency? 

As the administrator, you will receive everything you need from Kinsa to manage the program, including informational materials, brochures you can distribute, and access to a school portal. The portal will automatically show you how many families are opting-in to receive a free Kinsa Smart thermometer, so you can effortlessly track the thermometers you receive and distribute. The portal will also enable you to easily monitor illness spread in your school and send out announcements to students and staff.

4. Does this program create more work for already-overworked school nurses?

No! Our goal is to decrease the workload on school nurses by: 
  • Arming families with thermometers so sick children are not sent in to school, limiting the spread of illness.
  • Reducing unnecessary school clinic visits as fewer parents send sick children to school.
  • Helping nurses know what trends are going around their school so they can react appropriately and encourage preventive health measures to keep healthy students well.

5. Do my students have to use Kinsa? Does it replace the screening tool?

FLUency is a completely opt-in program. Your school opts-in, and all participating families and staff opt-in. Your students are not mandated to use Kinsa (though families love it!)

Kinsa is a health monitoring and triage tool for the household where as NYC DOE’s Health Screening Tool is required for physical entry into a DOE building.

6. How can Kinsa afford to send out free thermometers?

Thanks to a sponsorship by Lysol, Kinsa is able to send out tens of thousands of free thermometers to school families each year. Participating schools will receive Lysol disinfectant spray and several canisters of Lysol wipes per classroom along with Kinsa smart thermometers, the accompanying software, and the early warning insights included with the FLUency program. 

Note that no data from the program is shared with Lysol, and Kinsa does not support ads from sponsors or other companies.

7. Having trouble logging into your School Portal?

If you're trying to log on using your school's internet network while on campus, your school's security settings may be blocking the Kinsa School Portal site.

As a temporary fix - set your password or log in while on your home wifi network, or on a device not connected to the school’s internet, like your cell phone.

As a long-term fix - email the below message to your school's IT department. Once they whitelist the site, you'll be able to log in on your school's network!

I will be using this Kinsa for Schools website to manage a school health program we're running this year and our school's network settings are currently preventing me from accessing the page. Thank you!

8. Does the Kinsa app work in other languages?

The Kinsa app and informational materials are currently available in English and Spanish. Additionally, much of the app uses easy-to-understand visuals and has an intuitive user experience, which is helpful for those who speak a different language at home.

9. Is Kinsa compliant with all applicable medical privacy regulations?

Yes! Additionally, for schools, as we do not have visibility into a student’s education records, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) does not apply to Kinsa products.
